When Grandma Burnt Her Bra uses humour to tell the story of feminism and women’s rights, exploring how, throughout history, both men and women have broken down barriers. The illustrations help convey, carefully and quirkily, the complex message that things were not always equal — and that they are not yet equal — which means that each generation faces the continued fight for equality. The call to action is to carry the flame forward. And best of all, this book has dinosaurs!

REVIEWS

When Grandma Burnt Her Bra has already taken its place on my shelves of favourites. A book about a sensitive and serious subject, told in a hilarious way, it doesn’t shy away from the truth of history. At the same time, it makes the history accessible for little ones, and even big ones, to understand. I have seen no other book that tackles the history of feminism and women’s rights in such an effective and entertaining way. I’m sure little people will ask for it to be read over and over. Perhaps in one of those readings they will realise why it’s important to not accept things as they are just because they always were, and that the only way to effect change is to do something.
— Norah Colvin, READ I LEARN
When Grandma Burnt Her Bra is a story of empowerment with a dash of fun.
— THE CANBERRA TIMES
This is a strong artistic pairing. I especially like the maturity of the language both creators use; they both assume the intelligence and curiosity of their readers.
— Barbie Robinson, LIVING ARTS CANBERRA
The illustrations are bright and playful and the book has a delightful energy that sweeps you up in it – meaning your kids may even want to burn their undies once the last page is turned.
— SYDNEY SOUTH HERALD
This is a funny first book about activism and feminism that should definitely get children interested in the topic.
— PICTURE BOOK PARENTS
This was terrifically good fun to read as a feisty Grandma. This a humorous look at the battle for women’s rights, with some hilarious cartoon-style illustrations to highlight the actions of those feminists who fought the good fight.

Catch them young I say! This is a fabulous book to share with Smalls from Prep upwards to discuss the roles all people can take on in contemporary society, and the notion of equality for all.

I would happily share this with Upper Primary as a provocation to further discussion, particularly those who are looking at Democracy and government.

Highly recommended for readers from around 4 years upwards.
